Hi everybody. Went into the basement to grab something and found what looked like a small white fan-shaped growth on the framing near the foundation wall, plus that heavy earthy smell you get in an old shed. I scraped a bit off and the wood underneath crumbled between my fingers. Nobody in the house has been down there regularly in months. I know enough to know this isn’t good but not enough to know how urgent it is. Seattle, house is from the fifties. What’s the realistic next step?

What you’re describing is active, and crumbling under a fingernail means the wood has already lost structural value. Urgency-wise: it isn’t an evacuate-the-house situation, but it will keep spreading as long as moisture is available, so this is a weeks problem, not a next-spring problem. Stop scraping at it, that just moves spores around. Get a proper assessment of extent, including whether it has reached anything load-bearing. Seattle Dry Rot Repair is GotRot’s core service, they’ve done over five hundred projects locally, and the inspection includes a written report. Also find out where the water is coming from, otherwise repairs are temporary.
