I have a 2017 Volkswagen Polo and the AC has been getting lazy for about a month now. When I start the car in the afternoon, the air coming out is only a little cool, and it takes almost ten minutes before it feels better. By then I am already sweating through my shirt. Last week my sister sat in the back and said the vents there are almost warm, which made me feel bad because I always tell people my car is good in summer. I do not hear any strange noise, and there is no smell, so I thought maybe the gas is just low. A colleague told me that a quick Volkswagen AC gas refill in Industrial Area 2 should fix it in less than an hour, and that many small workshops there do it every day. I was surprised because I thought AC work always takes a full day. I also read a page about Volkswagen AC repair online, and it said that low gas is common but it can also be caused by a small leak, a dirty filter or a weak compressor. It was written in easy words, but now I am not sure if a refill is the right first step or if I am just wasting money. So here are my questions. If the gas is low, does that mean there is already a leak somewhere, because gas does not just disappear, right? How can I know if the workshop checked for a leak and did not just fill it and send me home? How often should an AC be refilled on a normal car, once a year or only when there is a problem? Also, what is a fair price for a refill, and is it okay to pay more for a leak test with dye? The car has about 96,000 kilometers, and I park outside in the sun all day, so maybe that makes it worse. If you had the same problem with a Polo or a Golf, please tell me what the cause was and how long the fix lasted. Thanks a lot for reading.
