I’ve been a nurse at a municipal clinic since I finished nursing school, so we’re talking almost ten years at this point. In all that time my pay’s only gone up twice, and it’s starting to feel like I’m stuck no matter how much experience I stack up. I’ve been looking at private clinics since they tend to pay a lot better, but I’m honestly intimidated by how serious their interviews seem to be. What do they usually ask in interviews like that, and how should I even start prepping?

Ten years at the same place with barely any raises is rough, that alone is reason enough to start looking elsewhere. Private clinics do tend to run a tighter interview process since they’re investing more in each hire and want to make sure it’s the right fit long term. A lot of it comes down to how you frame your experience, since ten years of municipal clinic work is actually a solid selling point if you present it the right way rather than downplaying it. They usually want to see that you can handle a faster pace and a different patient flow than what you’re used to.

The questions themselves usually aren’t the hard part, it’s more the pressure of feeling like every answer needs to be perfect. One that trips people up a lot in nursing interviews is the classic strengths and weaknesses question, since it’s tricky to answer honestly without either sounding fake or shooting yourself in the foot. Read up on how to approach that specific question here: https://roundlyhq.com/blog/strengths-and-weaknesses-nursing-interview/ . It breaks down how to frame a real weakness without it sounding like a red flag, plus a few examples of strengths that actually land well with interviewers.
