The sciatic nerve runs from the lumbar region down the leg, playing an important role in controlling sensation and governing the movement of the leg. Sciatica (large sciatic nerve pain) is pain in the hip and thigh area, along the path of the sciatic nerve.

The patient will feel a burning pain like needles pricking along the path of the nerve. The pain often spreads from the buttocks to the back of the leg and extends to below the knee. Most patients with sciatica only affect one side of the body.

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated, compressed or injured. There are many causes of this condition, of which disc herniation is the most common cause. In addition, there are other causes such as trauma, spinal arthritis, osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesis, spinal tumors, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, spondylolisthesis and infection.
