Our company has had a Wikipedia page for a few years, but some of the information on it is now outdated. It still mentions an old office location, a couple of former executives, and a business division we no longer operate. Someone on our team suggested updating it ourselves, but I’ve heard that editing articles about your own company can cause problems. We have official announcements and news coverage to support the changes, so it’s not like we’re trying to rewrite the company’s history. Has anyone dealt with this before? Is it better to request the corrections through Wikipedia or find someone experienced who can handle the editing properly?

A company website gets updated the day an office moves or an executive leaves. Wikipedia can sit there for years until somebody notices that half the company description belongs to another era. Since you’re connected to the company, I’d avoid quietly editing the article yourself and use the article’s Talk page to request the corrections with the supporting sources attached. Keep each request narrow and factual, especially for things like the address, current leadership, and a division that no longer exists.

Wikipedia wording can be surprisingly touchy even when the underlying correction seems completely obvious. Change too much at once or use company-style language and the discussion can quickly become about the editor rather than the outdated facts. Give them the sources for each individual change and keep the requested edits limited to information that can actually be verified. Whoever handles the work should also follow Wikipedia’s disclosure rules for paid or connected editing.
