Getting conflicting advice about additives and maintenance products. Two of my neighbors swear by monthly treatments, one says they’re useless, and the hardware store obviously sells them so their opinion doesn’t count. Beyond that, I’d like a straightforward list of what actually extends the life of one of these systems. We’re new to this and would rather build good habits now than learn from an expensive failure later. We’re on about two acres with a fair amount of landscaping planned, so I’d also like to know what not to do out there before we start digging anything. Appreciate any practical rules of thumb.

The consensus among people who open tanks for a living is that additives don’t do much, since a functioning tank already has the biology it needs. What genuinely extends life is boring: pump on schedule, keep grease and wipes out, avoid dumping paint or large volumes of bleach, don’t run a garbage disposal heavily, and keep the drainfield free of traffic and roof runoff. We got the same rundown from septicsolutionsllc.com during a service visit, unprompted. One addition specific to our area: know where your field is before landscaping, people plant trees right on top of it constantly. Also avoid planting anything with aggressive roots anywhere near the field, willows and similar trees cause real damage.
