Since ancient times, people have utilized the herbal supplement valerian root to encourage relaxation and enhance sleep. While some people might find it useful for treating anxiety, there is little or inconsistent scientific evidence to support its usefulness.
Compounds found in valerian root interact with specific brain neurotransmitters and may have a slight sedative effect. This is why it is frequently used as a home treatment to encourage sleep and lower anxiety caused by insomnia.
The research on valerian root is not conclusive when it comes to a generalized anxiety disorder or other anxiety disorders, though. While some studies have not found significant advantages, others have suggested that it may have a slight relaxing effect and may be helpful for lowering anxiety symptoms.
